Ethnic Enrichment Festival

The Ethnic Enrichment Commission (EEC) began as the Ethnic Heritage Committee, established to celebrate America’s Bicentennial. Building on the success of those festivities, the committee debuted the first Ethnic Enrichment Festival on June 1, 1980, at Liberty Memorial Mall.

The festival’s success inspired Mayor Richard L. Berkley, Mrs. Berkley, and Councilman Victor Swyden to develop a city ordinance establishing the Mayor’s Ethnic Enrichment Commission- ensuring the continued celebration of cultural diversity in our community.

The next three festivals expanded into two-day events held in August at Washington Square Park. By 1984, continued growth led to the move to Swope Park. In 1985, the festival became the full weekend celebration we know today, held annually on the third weekend of August.

Today, the Ethnic Enrichment Festival is proudly presented in partnership with the Kansas City Parks & Recreation Department, continuing its tradition of bringing cultures together in one vibrant, unforgettable event.
